How to use
Dissolve one dose (500 mg) of powder in water or fruit juice, stir and drink. It can also be added to your favourite beverage or protein shake. Since the per-serving dose is substantially lower than the daily amounts studied in clinical research for weight management (1.8-4 g/day), a single dose per day is unlikely to achieve the effects described in those studies.
Pros and Cons
Gluten-free
No added sweeteners, flavourings or colourings – a pure amino acid (100% acetyl-L-carnitine)
Powder form allows flexible dosing according to needs
The 500 mg per-serving dose is well below the range studied in clinical trials for weight management (1.8-4 g/day) (Pooyandjoo et al., 2016)
The acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) form is less researched for weight management purposes than for cognitive support, even though the product is positioned as an aid for weight loss
No publicly available independent lab-testing report
Relatively high price given the small amount of active ingredient per dose
Suitable for
People looking for a pure, single-ingredient form of carnitine with no added extras
People who want to try the acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) form, more often researched for cognitive support than for weight loss
People who avoid gluten
Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) is a form of carnitine that has been acetylated, which allows it to cross the blood-brain barrier more quickly, so it is more often used in research related to cognitive function, while L-carnitine L-tartrate (LCLT) is the better-researched form for athletic recovery and fat metabolism (NIH ODS, 2023). For the weight-management purpose this product claims, ALCAR is not the first choice based on currently available evidence. If your primary goal is weight-management support, it may make more sense to consider a product with L-carnitine L-tartrate at an appropriate dose.
Probably not to the extent shown in clinical research. A meta-analysis of 9 randomized controlled trials (Pooyandjoo et al., 2016) showed a modest additional weight loss (about 1.3 kg compared to placebo) at doses of 1.8-4 g per day over 30-360 days – i.e. at doses three to eight times higher than the 500 mg in this product. At such a low dose, comparable effects cannot be expected, and weight loss always remains primarily dependent on overall energy balance, diet and physical activity.
In our data on this product, there is no publicly published independent laboratory report checking, for example, microbiological purity or heavy metal content for a specific batch. This doesn't necessarily mean the product isn't manufactured to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards, but it does mean AdvancedU has no documented, batch-specific evidence of this, which is why the product scores low on the independent testing criterion. If publicly available testing documentation matters to you, some other products within this ingredient category (e.g. GymBeam brand products) have publicly accessible lab reports.
In healthy adults, L-carnitine at moderate doses (up to about 2 g/day) is generally considered safe, while at higher doses (around 3 g and above) digestive side effects such as nausea and cramps have been reported (NIH ODS, 2023) – at 500 mg per dose, this risk is low. However, the manufacturer does not provide an explicit warning for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, or people with kidney disease or epilepsy, for whom carnitine is otherwise recommended with caution. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have any of the mentioned health conditions, consult a doctor before using the product.
