Description of L-Carnitine Tartrate

Short summary

L-Carnitine Tartrate by 4Endurance provides 1000 mg of L-carnitine tartrate (LCLT) per 2-capsule dose, the form that is scientifically better researched for sports use. The formula is transparent and contains few excipients, though the label does not include an explicit warning for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers or children.

How to use

Take two capsules 30 minutes before training. On days when you do not train, take two capsules in the morning with a meal containing simple carbohydrates. For optimal action of L-carnitine tartrate, it is recommended to take it before exercise where simple carbohydrates, such as an energy gel or an isotonic drink, will be used as 'fuel'.

Pros and Cons

Contains L-carnitine-L-tartrate (LCLT), the form used in a controlled study on post-exercise recovery (Waldman et al., 2021)
Vegan capsule shell (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose) instead of gelatin
Short, transparent formula with only one additional excipient (anti-caking agent)
No major allergens listed
Includes concrete instructions for timing the dose with training (before training vs. rest days)
The daily dose (1000 mg) reaches about half of the lower bound of the clinically studied range for weight management (1.8-4 g/day) (Pooyandjoo et al., 2016)
The label does not contain an explicit warning for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers or children, which is more commonly stated on other products in this category
No publicly published independent lab test report

Suitable for

Athletes and recreational users who use simple carbohydrates before training and want L-carnitine-L-tartrate as an addition to their routine
People looking for a vegan version of L-carnitine (the capsule is made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose)
Users who value a transparent, short formula with few excipients
The manufacturer's recommendation stems from L-carnitine's role in transporting fatty acids into mitochondria for energy production, and combining it with simple carbohydrates is theorized to improve carnitine uptake into muscles. However, it should be noted that scientific evidence on L-carnitine's effect on physical performance is mixed and depends on the type of exercise - it appears to be more beneficial for endurance, submaximal exercise than for short, high-intensity exercise (Fatouros et al., 2021). The precise timing of intake is therefore not scientifically proven to be a key factor, while consistent daily use over a longer period is more important for any potential effect (Waldman et al., 2021).
It is true that this product's label - unlike some other L-carnitine products in our range - does not contain an explicit warning for pregnant or breastfeeding women. This does not automatically mean the product is unsuitable for them, but it does mean that clear manufacturer guidance is missing. Since the safety of dietary L-carnitine supplementation during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been comprehensively studied, AdvancedU recommends that during this period, before using any dietary supplement - even if the label does not carry an explicit warning - you always consult your gynecologist or personal physician beforehand.
The main difference lies in the precision of naming the active ingredient. This product explicitly states L-carnitine-L-tartrate (LCLT) - the form directly used in a controlled study on post-exercise recovery (Waldman et al., 2021) - while the other comparably dosed product only lists a general 'L-carnitine base' without a more precise specification of the salt. The dose of the active ingredient is the same in both cases (1000 mg/day), so the main difference is in the transparency of the formula, and the fact that with this product you can more directly compare the dose to those used in the clinical literature on post-exercise recovery.
Evidence on L-carnitine's effect on physical performance is divided and depends on the type of exercise. A systematic review found that L-carnitine is more beneficial for submaximal, endurance exercise than for short, high-intensity exercise, meaning that general claims of improved performance are not unambiguously supported for all types of training (Fatouros et al., 2021). The effect on post-exercise recovery is more consistently documented - a three-week RCT showed improved recovery with supplementation of 2 g of L-carnitine-L-tartrate per day (Waldman et al., 2021), which is somewhat higher than the dose in this product (1000 mg/day). For direct improvement in athletic performance, therefore, a reliable, unambiguous effect should not be expected.
No major allergens listed.
Do not exceed the recommended daily amount or dose.
