Description of Magnesium Malate - GymBeam

Short summary

GymBeam Magnesium Malate contains magnesium bound to malic acid (malate), in a highly bioavailable form. The daily dose (2 capsules) provides 200 mg of elemental magnesium, or approximately 53% of the recommended daily intake, and supports muscle function, the nervous system, energy metabolism and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. It is suitable for athletes, active individuals and anyone who wants to support the body's general everyday functioning.

How to use

Take 1 capsule twice a day with a large glass of water. The capsules can be taken with a meal or at any time during the day. Magnesium is generally recommended to be taken in the morning, before noon, or before exercise, as it helps the body produce energy, but consistent daily intake is far more important for actual effect than the precise timing of consumption.

Pros and Cons

Contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue
Supports normal muscle function
Contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system
Helps maintain an adequate balance of fluids and minerals in the body
Publicly available, batch-specific report from an independent laboratory (GBA Group, 10/2025)
Does not contain additional vitamins or minerals for synergistic action (e.g. vitamin B6)
The dose provides approximately 53% of the recommended daily intake of magnesium, which is less than some products with a higher elemental magnesium content
Besides magnesium malate, the capsule also contains maltodextrin and a colorant (calcium carbonate), which do not contribute to the effect

Suitable for

Athletes in endurance and strength sports
People under greater physical or mental strain
People dealing with tiredness and exhaustion
Vegans and vegetarians
The daily dose (2 capsules) provides 200 mg of elemental magnesium, which is approximately 53% of the reference daily intake. This is lower than some competing products, but still a meaningful supplement, especially since magnesium malate as a form is characterized by relatively high bioavailability - in a comparative study it achieved higher and more sustained blood magnesium levels than most other commonly used forms, including citrate (Uysal et al., 2018). The recommended daily intake of magnesium is 310-420 mg (NIH ODS, 2024), so the product is not meant to be the sole source, but rather a supplement to the magnesium you otherwise consume through food (nuts, whole grains, leafy green vegetables).
The product has a publicly available report from an independent laboratory (GBA Group, October 2025) that is tied to a specific product batch - this is rare for mineral supplements and represents an important advantage, since raw materials based on magnesium salts are occasionally exposed, in independent tests, to the risk of heavy metal contamination due to their mineral origin. The report itself does not represent the same level of assurance as certifications such as Informed Sport or NSF Certified for Sport, which also check every batch for banned substances for competitive athletes, but it is certainly a step beyond a manufacturer's own GMP declaration alone, which many competing products in this category rely on.
Magnesium is a cofactor in neuromuscular transmission and energy metabolism, which is why it is often linked to recovery after physical activity; a systematic review of studies suggests that magnesium supplementation may reduce muscle soreness for certain types of physical activity, although the evidence is not yet fully consistent across all types of exercise and populations (PMC11227245, 2024). Malate, as an intermediate metabolite of the Krebs cycle, is traditionally additionally associated with energy metabolism. Nevertheless, the product is not intended to treat or prevent muscle soreness - it is a supportive supplement alongside otherwise adequate rest, hydration and training, and its effect is individual.
For adults, the upper limit for supplemental (additional) magnesium is 350 mg of elemental magnesium per day (NIH ODS, 2024); the 200 mg from this product is therefore well within that limit, making daily use relatively safe for healthy adults. Nevertheless, the manufacturer correctly warns not to exceed the recommended dose, and the product is not intended for children, pregnant women or breastfeeding mothers. If you have kidney disease, are taking medication (e.g. antibiotics, diuretics) or have another chronic health condition, consult a doctor before taking magnesium regularly, as the risk of accumulation may increase with reduced magnesium excretion.
May contain traces of gluten-containing cereals, soy and milk.
Do not exceed the recommended daily dose

People with kidney disease or those taking medication (e.g. antibiotics, diuretics) should consult a doctor before use
