Description of ZMB6 - GymBeam

Short summary

ZMB6 is a combined dietary supplement from the GymBeam brand, combining zinc, magnesium and vitamin B6 in a single capsule - three nutrients that act as cofactors in energy metabolism, neuromuscular function and immune function. The product is often marketed as support for overnight recovery and sleep, although independent evidence does not confirm the frequently mentioned boost in testosterone.

How to use

Take the recommended daily amount in the evening, approximately 30-60 minutes before bed and separately from meals rich in calcium (such as milk or dairy products), because calcium can reduce the absorption of zinc and magnesium. Take the capsule with a glass of water. Do not adjust the dose yourself without consulting a pharmacist or doctor.

Pros and Cons

A practical combination of three interrelated nutrients in one product instead of three separate supplements
An established brand with clearly stated doses of individual ingredients on the label
Suitable for evening use as part of a bedtime routine, in line with more recent research on ZMA and sleep quality (Larsen et al., 2024)
Independent, non-sponsored research has not confirmed the often-advertised boost in testosterone or strength from ZMA/ZMB6 combinations (Wilborn et al., 2004)
The effect on sleep is moderate in studies and varies individually - this is not a sleep-inducing substance
If zinc and magnesium intake from food is already sufficient, the additional effect of supplementation may not be noticeable

Suitable for

Recreational athletes who want to cover their daily needs for zinc, magnesium and vitamin B6 with a single capsule
People with restless sleep looking for gentle, scientifically supported support before bed
People with increased needs for these minerals due to regular physical activity and sweating
We understand where these expectations come from - the original study on the ZMA formula did report a noticeable increase in testosterone, but that research was conducted by the developers and patent owners of the formula itself. When independent researchers with no financial interest tested the same combination on 42 trained men over 8 weeks, they found no statistically significant differences in testosterone, growth hormone, IGF-1, cortisol or strength compared to placebo (Wilborn et al., 2004). Zinc and magnesium are important cofactors in metabolism and overall health, so the product makes sense as support for covering needs for these nutrients, but not as a means to boost testosterone.
Yes, this is an established way of using this combination of ingredients. More recent research has shown that adding ZMA/magnesium after partial sleep deprivation can improve subjective sleep quality and morning readiness in athletes (Larsen et al., 2024; 2024, PMC11313716). Magnesium is involved in regulating the nervous system (GABA/NMDA), which is the physiological basis for this connection. The effects are moderate in studies and vary between individuals, so the product should not be understood as a sleeping aid, but rather as gentle support that works best combined with regular sleep hygiene.
Caution is warranted. The upper safe limit for zinc for adults is 40 mg per day, and chronically exceeding it can interfere with copper absorption and weaken the immune system, while the EU upper limit for vitamin B6 is 12 mg per day (EFSA). Standard doses of B6 in products of this type (2-11 mg) are far below the threshold associated with side effects, which mainly occur with chronic intake above 1000 mg per day (Hemminger & Wills, 2023). If you are simultaneously taking a multivitamin or other supplements with these minerals, add up your total daily intake and reduce the dose of one of the products if needed.
Magnesium has a documented role in reducing muscle soreness after exercise (DOMS) through an anti-inflammatory mechanism, which is supported by more recent systematic reviews (2024, PMC11227245), while zinc is an important cofactor in protein synthesis and immune function, which is relevant for recovery in intensively trained athletes (ISSN Mineral Review, 2019, PMC6471179). The effect is more pronounced if you are borderline deficient in these minerals due to sweating and high training load, and less so if your intake from food is already sufficient.
No major allergens listed.
During pregnancy and breastfeeding, consult a doctor before use.
People with kidney disease should consult a doctor before use, as impaired kidney function can increase the risk of magnesium accumulation.
If you are simultaneously taking other dietary supplements or multivitamin preparations with zinc, magnesium or vitamin B6, pay attention to the total daily intake so you do not exceed safe upper limits.
