Electrolytes can support muscle function, as sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium are involved in muscle contraction and nerve impulse transmission. However, evidence on direct cramp prevention is not conclusive - one study found a slightly lower incidence of exercise-associated muscle cramps with an electrolyte-amino acid mixture compared to a regular carbohydrate-electrolyte drink, but the differences were modest, and the mechanism of cramps is multifactorial, depending also on fitness level, temperature, and individual factors (McIntosh et al., 2024). Therefore, the product cannot be presented as reliably 'preventing' cramps, but rather as support for overall mineral balance during exercise.
The manufacturer recommends up to 4 tablets daily, each dissolved in 200-300 ml of water, which amounts to approximately 1 g of sodium and 280 mg of potassium daily from this product. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose, as excessive mineral intake can disrupt the body's natural electrolyte balance. It is known that during prolonged endurance exertion, severe hyponatremia (excessively low sodium concentration) due to water intake alone without electrolytes is rare, but can be serious (Rangan et al., 2021) - which supports the rationale for moderate electrolyte supplementation, but not arbitrarily high doses.
If you have high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, or take medications such as diuretics or ACE inhibitors, consult a doctor before using electrolyte products. The sodium and potassium in the product can affect the functioning of such medications or blood pressure regulation, so making an independent decision about supplementation without medical advice is not recommended. The same applies to people with chronic kidney disease, where additional potassium intake can increase the risk of hyperkalemia regardless of the salt form the potassium comes from (Sarnowski et al., 2022).
For shorter, moderate activity (up to approximately 60 minutes), plain water is usually sufficient, as the body does not lose enough electrolytes during this time to necessitate supplementation. Electrolyte products, such as these tablets, are more useful for exercise longer than 60-90 minutes, heavy sweating, or exercise in the heat, where sodium replenishment has been shown to better maintain hydration than water alone (Pérez-Castillo et al., 2024). For the average recreational exerciser with shorter, milder workouts, the product is therefore not essential, but it can be a useful and convenient choice if you want to further boost your mineral intake.
