Description of L-Glutamine - GymBeam

Short summary

L-glutamine is an amino acid that muscles in healthy, well-nourished people largely produce on their own. One serving (6 g) provides pure L-glutamine with no flavors or sweeteners. Some people use it during periods of very intense training, when the body is under more stress, although the evidence for actual muscle benefit in healthy, trained individuals is weak. The strongest evidence for it exists in hospitalized patients, not in athletes.

How to use

Mix 1 scoop (6 g) with 200-250 ml of water and consume 1-2 times daily. It is most commonly used after training, but can also be taken in the morning or before bed – the exact timing isn't crucial; what matters more is regular daily use during periods when it makes sense (e.g. a period of very intense or prolonged training).

Pros and Cons

Clean formula – just L-glutamine, no flavors or sweeteners
Independently tested for heavy metals and bacteria (test: May 2026)
Good solubility and neutral taste (according to users)
A safe, well-researched amino acid at recommended doses
Evidence for muscle recovery/growth in healthy, well-nourished exercisers is weak
The body mostly produces enough of it on its own with normal training
It does not by itself increase muscle mass without proper training and nutrition
It is scientifically best proven effective in hospitalized patients (e.g. after surgery), not in healthy athletes

Suitable for

Athletes during periods of very intense or prolonged training – extra support for the body
Vegans and vegetarians – a plant-derived amino acid
Good question – it's true that glutamine isn't an essential amino acid in the sense of needing to be obtained solely from food. Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body – in muscles, it accounts for around 60% of all free amino acids. Almost all cells, especially muscles, can produce it themselves, which is why healthy, well-nourished people's bodies produce it in sufficient quantities. It becomes more important only in states of severe stress on the body, such as injuries, burns, or recovery after surgery, when needs exceed the body's own production – this threshold usually isn't reached with recreational training.
The evidence in healthy, trained individuals is weak. In one study, 6 weeks of taking glutamine during strength training in young adults showed the same progress in strength and body composition as a placebo (Candow et al., 2001). A more recent review of several clinical studies also found no benefit of glutamine for body composition, endurance, or resistance in athletes, aside from minor effects at very high doses (Ramezani Ahmadi et al., 2019) – realistically, expect at most mild additional support, not a noticeable boost in recovery.
No, its role is different. Unlike some other amino acids, such as leucine, which directly stimulates muscle growth, glutamine doesn't have a comparable role – the body produces enough of it with normal food intake and training. The claim that glutamine 'builds muscle' is therefore not supported by evidence; its role is more supportive, for example in digestion, rather than directly muscle-building.
Its most well-proven role is in hospitalized patients – after injuries, burns, or surgeries, where the body can't produce enough on its own. For recreational and competitive athletes, it may offer minor support during periods of very high strain, such as competition preparation or very intense training cycles, but this isn't the same as proven muscle benefits during regular training. At recommended doses, it's considered safe even with longer-term use; caution is advisable for individuals with liver or kidney conditions.
