Description of Magnesium Citrate Capsules - GymBeam

Short summary

GymBeam Magnesium Citrate Capsules contain magnesium in the form of citrate in a hypromellose (vegan) capsule, with no unnecessary additives. One daily dose (2 capsules) provides 210 mg of elemental magnesium, which contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to normal muscle and nervous system function. The product is independently laboratory-tested for microbiological purity, heavy metals, and active substance content.

How to use

Take 2 capsules a day, preferably with a meal, with a sufficient amount of water. For better digestive tolerance, you can split the dose into two parts throughout the day instead of taking it all at once.

Pros and Cons

Magnesium in citrate form, which is better absorbed than cheaper magnesium oxide (Kappeler et al., 2017)
Short, transparent composition – just magnesium citrate, an anti-caking agent and a vegan capsule, with no unnecessary fillers
Independently tested in Germany for microbiology, heavy metals and active substance content
Convenient form (2 capsules a day) with no taste and no need to mix with liquid
210 mg of elemental magnesium per day covers only about 56% of the reference intake value, which is less than the doses used in clinical studies (~300 mg)
Independent testing is not publicly published at the individual batch level, so you cannot verify it yourself as a buyer
In more sensitive individuals, the citrate form may cause a mild laxative effect

Suitable for

People who want a simple daily magnesium supplement without measuring powder
Vegans and vegetarians – the capsule is made of hypromellose (HPMC), free of gelatin
Recreational athletes and active individuals who lose electrolytes through sweat during exercise
People who want to avoid artificial sweeteners and flavors
The difference lies primarily in solubility and the resulting absorption. Magnesium oxide is poorly soluble in the digestive tract, so the body actually absorbs only a small fraction of it, while magnesium citrate remains soluble across a wide pH range and achieves significantly higher magnesium excretion in urine as well as higher serum concentrations at the same dose (Lindberg et al., 1990; Kappeler et al., 2017). In practice, this means that with the citrate form, more magnesium actually enters the body from the same number of milligrams listed on the label. This doesn't mean oxide is useless – it's simply a less effective choice for supplementation purposes, while citrate is one of the better-researched, versatile organic sources of magnesium.
210 mg of elemental magnesium covers approximately 56% of the recommended daily intake, while studies that showed measurable effects on vascular function used doses of around 300-350 mg per day (Schutten et al., 2022). This doesn't mean the lower dose is useless – it still contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to normal muscle and nervous system function, especially if you cover a large part of the remaining intake through diet (nuts, legumes, whole grains). If you're looking for a dose closer to the amounts used in research, you may need an additional source of magnesium or a product with a higher dose per capsule.
In chronic kidney disease, magnesium excretion through the kidneys is reduced, which creates an increased risk of magnesium accumulation in the body (hypermagnesemia), especially with concurrent use of magnesium-containing laxatives or antacids (Vermeulen and Vervloet, 2023). Serious symptomatic hypermagnesemia is rare, but for this group we recommend that you always check with your doctor or nephrologist whether the dose is suitable for you before introducing any magnesium supplement, including this product. AdvancedU does not recommend such products as a standalone decision in cases of already diagnosed kidney disease.
The exact time of day is not critical for the effect of magnesium – what matters more is taking the dose regularly every day. Some users prefer to take magnesium in the evening, associating it with relaxation before sleep, although slightly stronger direct evidence for this specific effect has been gathered for the magnesium bisglycinate form due to the additional glycine mechanism. For general magnesium supplementation, as provided by citrate, you can take the capsules at any time of day, with a meal, which also improves digestive tolerance.
No major allergens declared.
This product is not intended for children. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before use.
People with chronic kidney disease should only use magnesium supplements under medical supervision, as they have a reduced ability to excrete magnesium (Vermeulen and Vervloet, 2023).
Do not exceed the stated daily dose (2 capsules).
