Description of ZMB | zinc, magnesium, vitamin B6 in capsules

Short summary

How to use

Take the recommended daily amount of capsules with a sufficient amount of water, preferably in the evening and separately from meals rich in calcium, as calcium can reduce the absorption of zinc and magnesium. Do not adjust the dose yourself without consulting a pharmacist or doctor.

Pros and Cons

A simple, clear basic combination of three interrelated nutrients in one product
Capsules are a convenient form for everyday use without the need to measure out powder
Affordable price position compared to products with more advanced (chelated) mineral forms
The name and market positioning of the product don't indicate the use of advanced, better-absorbed forms of zinc and magnesium (e.g. bisglycinate), which in this product category is often a sign of cheaper, less bioavailable compounds (e.g. oxide)
The lack of publicly available detailed data on the origin and form of the minerals makes it difficult to assess the actual quality of the ingredients
Independent science does not support the common claims of raising testosterone associated with this category of products (Wilborn et al., 2004)

Suitable for

People looking for an affordable basic supplement with zinc, magnesium and vitamin B6
People with a generally balanced diet who only want minor additional support for their intake of these minerals
People who don't need the most advanced (and more expensive) chelated mineral forms, but rather basic coverage of daily needs
Don't expect this. The claim about testosterone increases with combinations of zinc, magnesium and vitamin B6 originates from the original, industry-funded study by the developers and patent holders of the ZMA formula. When independent researchers with no financial interest tested the same combination on 42 trained men over 8 weeks, they found no statistically significant differences in testosterone, growth hormone, IGF-1, cortisol or strength compared to placebo (Wilborn et al., 2004). Zinc and magnesium are beneficial for general metabolism and immune function, but not proven to raise hormones.
Yes, the form matters, as it affects actual absorption into the body. Zinc or magnesium oxide, which is a cheaper raw material, has, for example, significantly lower bioavailability than chelated forms such as bisglycinate - for zinc, absorption differences between forms reach as much as approximately 43% (Devarshi et al., 2024). If the label doesn't state the precise chemical form, we recommend checking the packaging declaration or contacting the manufacturer before purchase, as the same number of milligrams on the label doesn't necessarily mean the same actual benefit to the body.
At doses that comply with the label's recommendations, long-term use is generally safe for healthy adults. The upper safe limit for zinc is 40 mg per day, and chronically exceeding it can interfere with copper absorption and weaken immune function (NCBI Bookshelf, DRI Zinc). Vitamin B6 at the standard doses found in these products (usually under 12 mg, which is also the EU upper limit) is safe, while neuropathy generally only occurs at a chronic dose above 1000 mg per day (Hemminger & Wills, 2023). If you have kidney disease or are pregnant, consult a doctor before use regardless.
Price is often linked to the chemical form of the minerals used and the extent of additional documentation (e.g. independent lab reports). Cheaper raw materials, such as zinc or magnesium oxide, lower production costs, but also have lower actual absorption in the body compared to more advanced chelated forms (Devarshi et al., 2024). This doesn't necessarily mean the product doesn't work, but rather that you may need consistent, long-term use for the same physiological effect, while more expensive products with better absorption achieve a comparable effect faster or at a lower dose.
May contain traces of milk, eggs, cereals containing gluten, soy, peanuts, crustaceans, fish, molluscs, sulphur dioxide and nuts.
During pregnancy and breastfeeding, consult a doctor before use.
People with kidney disease should consult a doctor before use due to the risk of magnesium accumulation.
Do not exceed the recommended daily dose; pay attention to your total intake of zinc, magnesium and vitamin B6 if you are also taking other supplements or fortified foods at the same time.
